Massachusetts Health Care Quality and Cost Website: Information for Physicians and Other Health Care Providers

Patients, providers, employers, employees, insurers, and policymakers all have the same goal -- to contain health care costs yet maintain high quality health care. But quality and costs vary a lot. The Massachusetts Health Care Quality and Cost website shows quality and cost data from hospitals.

This website not only has accurate and up-to-date data but also is designed to be easy to understand by a wide range of users. Information comes from state and federal databases as well as other independent and trusted sources.

You can search for quality and cost information by location, by hospital, or by type of medical test and treatment. The data is presented three ways: summary pages with star and dollar sign ratings; detail pages with numeric and technical information; and pages with brief, simply written descriptions.

As a physician or other health care provider you can use this website to:

  • Help patients to be more informed consumers and partners in health care
  • Advise patients about specific referrals, high-risk procedures, insurance coverage, drug formularies, and procedure costs
  • Spend more time with patients and less time researching cost analysis and other data

This website is not meant to replace trusted relationships between patients and providers. Rather, it is intended as an important tool that everyone can use to make better health care decisions.

This website is designed for Massachusetts residents who are newly insured as well as those who have had health insurance for many years. Its goal is to improve health care quality through transparency and comparative quality information. The Massachusetts Health Care Quality and Cost Council designed and oversees this website.

Massachusetts made history in 2006 by passing a Health Care Reform law that allowed thousands of residents to obtain health insurance. The Massachusetts Health Care Quality and Cost Council was established as part of this law. It strives to implement actions that will lower or contain the growth of health care costs while improving the quality of care. The Council has an active Advisory Committee with representatives from consumers, businesses, health care providers, and health plans. It reports annually to the Massachusetts Legislature.
